Part of one of the longest and deepest cave systems in the subcontinent, a true spelunking adventure.

For the true adventurer, Umlawan Cave offers an experience unlike any other. Located in the Lumshnong area of the Jaintia Hills, this cave system is part of a massive subterranean network that is counted among the longest and deepest in the Indian subcontinent. Known locally simply as "The Cave," it is a world of darkness, mystery, and geological wonder.

A Subterranean Labyrinth

The cave system features a complex network of passages, shafts, and chambers. During the monsoon, many of these passages become active river ways, further shaping the limestone. The sheer scale of the system is awe-inspiring, with some sections requiring technical caving skills to navigate.

Geological Masterpieces

Inside, you will find spectacular limestone formations. Stalactites hang from the ceiling like chandeliers, while stalagmites rise to meet them. The cave also features flowstones, curtains, and cave pearls. The distinct ecosystem inside the cave is home to specialized cave fauna, adapted to life in eternal darkness.

The Thrill of Exploration

Exploring Umlawan is not a walk in the park; it is an expedition. It appeals to those who seek the thrill of the unknown and the challenge of navigating a harsh environment. Guided tours with experienced cavers are essential for a safe visit.
